capricorn glyphThe Capricorn Glyph

Capricorn, our 10th sign of the zodiac is represented by the Goat, or the mythical “Sea Goat”. The glyph could be considered one of the most unusual of the 12 signs, appearing as a representation of a mountain goat on top and a fish tail on the bottom.  In the ancient world, the goat was considered an animal with a strong will and the capacity to live in high places. The fish tail is the contrast, representing what is hidden below the surface. Both of these blended together reflect the nature of the sign.

Practical and hardworking

Organized, practical, and hard-working, our Capricorn natives are those we know we can count on to get the job done. They have a tremendous sense of responsibility and will do whatever it takes to achieve the necessary outcome. These folks are more than willing to put in extraordinary effort, reflecting their determination and ambitious nature. To many Capricorns, life is a series of projects which they approach realistically and pragmatically. They are meticulous with detail and leave nothing to chance. Much like the goat climbing to the top of the mountain, Capricorn will take one step at a time as they move towards their goal. Once they set their sights on an objective they will proceed with diligence and, at times, stubbornness.capricorn in business

Wisdom and Judgement

The third of our Earth signs, Capricorn shares the down-to-earth and practical nature of Taurus and Virgo.  While they may occasionally become materialistic, feeling the need to be properly rewarded for their work, Capricorns are far more often associated with dignified reserve. These are the “business people” of our zodiac and we can generally expect them to be gracious, respectable and proper. There is a sense of innate maturity with this sign and its natives often seem to have wisdom beyond their years. These are the elder statesmen who are often sought for their insight, good judgement and guidance.

A true Capricorn native will work to develop a strong reputation, and with a desire to be recognized, as an authority in their field. Gaining the respect of others and being rewarded for their accomplishments is what they strive for. The path to success isn’t always easy but our Mountain Goats (or Sea Goats) will push forward, at times quite tenaciously, without really giving any thought about who they might offend. They do not “suffer fools gladly” and can be quite critical of others who do not approach a project with an appropriate amount of concern and effort. They may unwittingly burn bridges on their journey up the mountain, forgetting that they will at some point require support or friends along the way. After all, achievement of the goal is paramount!

Honoring Tradition

Traditional and conventional, these natives can seem almost formal in how they go about things. It is not easy to know what lies below the surface of a Capricorn exterior.  Most manage their emotional nature and guard their true feelings, allowing only a select few to share in that part of their lives. They are the quintessential “stiff upper lip” that we often associate with the British stereotype history often reflects. No matter how difficult things may seem, or what type of challenge is presented, they will portray a calm, steadfast and resolute demeanor. Their opponents may diligently search for a weak spot or a tender nerve, but rarely will they be able to find one. Capricorn’s common sense approach with unwavering reliability and steadfast loyalty lead us to feel some degree of comfort that all is, or will be, well.

ruling planet saturnSaturn as Ruler

Ruled by the planet Saturn, it is no surprise that part of the Capricorn nature is unfailing punctuality. Time is one of the many forms of structure governed by Saturn (Kronos of Greek mythology) and executed by Capricorn. Saturn represents our boundaries and limits, giving us our rules and regulations. It is said that he represents all of our “shoulds”, the ones imposed upon us and those we take on willingly. It is how we manifest these particular traits that helps lead us towards achieving goals, or at least defining what our success might look like.

Naturally it follows that Capricorn rules the 10th House of the Horoscope.  This is the domain of Career, Honour, and our Status in the World. In this House we also find our authority figures. Employers and bosses, rulers, kings, presidents and father figures are also represented here. The sign on the cusp of the 10th House will give us some clues as to what we might need, or look for, in our chosen career. For example, Cancer on the cusp might suggest a safe or secure profession where caring for others is important.  The sign of Taurus in this position might represent a need for a stable career with a reliable and determined path.

Where we feel most responsible

Where Capricorn appears in our chart, by planet and house, hints at where we are likely to be quite responsible or traditional in our view or approach. Mercury in Capricorn may indicate a wise and careful thinker who presents ideas in a well-structured and formal manner, and approaches new ideas with caution. If this Mercury appears in the 9th house with Capricorn on the cusp, it could reflect an interest in learning about the philosophies of life, or perhaps foreign cultures or religions.

Capricorn traits provide us with a structure or foundation upon which we can build, supporting our efforts towards achievement. Used wisely, our Sea Goat can be a valuable ally. What does Capricorn in your chart say about you?
