Artist, Writer, and Traditional Māori Healer

Tony Bridge

I am an artist, writer and traditional Māori healer from New Zealand (Aotearoa). I am a Māori (Te Rarawa, Ngati Wikitoria) from the Hokianga region of Northland,New Zealand (Aotearoa). My geneology (whakapapa) traces back to an ancestor named, Tiirairaka, who arrived on the first voyage of the great Polynesian navigator, Kupe, around 975AD.

For the last 28 years I have been following the traditional Māori healer path called tohunga, often without realiseing it. About 28 years ago, I met another tohunga, who introduced me to IO Matua Kore (I:ɔ: Ma:tu:ʌ Kɔ:reɪ), the ancient spiritual tradition of my people. After a brief learning, he left me to find my own way for the next seventeen years. Then one day he phoned me. It is time for you to come and learn.

My mission (kaupapa) (kəʊpa:pᴧ) from that time has been to integrate what he taught me  into a way and a form that is accessible to people from all traditions. Te Kete O te Ao Maarama are the product of that long journey.

2 1/2 years ago I came home to Northland, to be among my own people, to sit at the feet of my kaitiaki ( kaɪti:a:ki:, spirit guardians) and tupuna (tu:pu:n ʌ), and follow their guidance.

Wellness, Strength, Wisdom and Peace to you all

Going Barefoot on the Earth ~ Papatuanuku

What is important is that we open the channel to the Divine/God/ IO, and that we work hard to both enlarge and keep open that channel. One way of doing that is through Nature, and our connection to the planet. We are a part of the planet, made from and fed by it. In time, each of us will return to it and be reabsorbed by it. Our physical self will no longer exist, and yet it will have become a part of the planet, as it was before it appeared. In so doing we will be connected to all those who have passed and all those yet to be formed from it. There is no physical separation, either past, present, or future. We arise from our mother, the earth, walk upon and with her, and then return to be with and within her once more.
