Full Moon January 2020

Full Moon in the Sign of Cancer (Sun in Capricorn/Moon in Cancer)

We celebrate the full moon in January 2020 with the Capricorn/Cancer polarity. The full moon moment occurs on January 10th at 11:21 am, (PST) It is preceded by a lunar eclipse at 11:11 am, making it a very powerful few minutes. In addition to these two events we also have 5 planets in the sign of Capricorn. So this is a very concentrated, intense energy that we will be dealing with this month.

Capricorn is considered to be a masculine energy, active and assertive while Cancer embodies the feminine principle, receptive and feeling. When these two signs are balanced we have a perfect marriage of will and love.

Capricorn is an earth sign which means it embodies the qualities of solidity, pragmatism and concrete reality, whereas Cancer is a water sign, making it much more fluid, sensitive and emotional. One question for us to contemplate this month is, “How do we balance the “go with the flow” energy of Cancer with the, “Let’s make it happen” energy of Capricorn? How do you see it playing out in your everyday life? Capricorn is a provider, Cancer the nurturer. Can we learn to be a nurturing provider? Cancer feels, Capricorn, not so much. How can we become lovingly detached?  Neither sign is radical or impulsive although both contain strong will energy.

This month we are also dealing with the energies of two eclipses plus a powerful Saturn/Pluto conjunction that occurs on January 12.

A solar eclipse in Capricorn occurred on Dec. 26th. Eclipses always portend endings or beginnings, births or deaths and can last up to 6 months in their impact. Solar eclipses are likely to impact our everyday lives. They can bring crises that demand our attention.  They can stir things up on a physical level. During this solar eclipse there is energy to begin, to set intentions, to vision possibilities.

The lunar eclipse that occurs on January 10th is in the sign of Cancer. With lunar energy there is usually something that needs to end. In Cancer, it brings to light issues around family, emotions, nurturing. It’s time to break old habits, behaviors or rigid thinking around these Cancerian themes.

The powerful and much talked about Saturn/Pluto conjunction begins on January 12 and lasts through January 23. This conjunction begins a Pluto cycle that will influence the next two years. Both of these planets are in the sign of Capricorn, which rules institutions. Pluto is the destroyer and Saturn is karma, and authority. So this conjunction has everything to do with how we wield our power, how we destroy the structures that no longer serve the higher good. This conjunction will “represent the karmic forces that will expose ethical abuses by authoritarians in power, precipitating economic insecurities and moral outrage.” (WeMoon, 2020) The collapse of the old order is accelerating.

These powerful energies will require that we strengthen our own inner resources. Let us dedicate ourselves anew to our own spiritual practices that keep us grounded, centered and aligned. Let us call on the light that increases each day, bring it into ourselves, and shine it out into our world.

Let Us Prepare Ourselves for Meditation

Please make sure you are in space where you will not be disturbed. Turning all electronic equipment off, and seating yourself comfortably, spine relatively erect but with no undo strain. Perhaps lighting a candle or sitting near your altar. It will be helpful if you have a pen and paper close by to write down any insights that come to you.

Close your eyes now and begin to feel the silence, Let it fill your body, breathe into it and notice how it calms everything down. The body becomes still, the mind quiets, the emotions settle. Visually imagine the light of the Soul entering your body at the crown chakra and spreading downward through the chakras into the earth. Feel this alignment take place within you. For a few minutes just breath quietly and evenly, establishing a quiet rhythm to your breathing.

Gently turn your attention back to Dec. 26th, the day after Christmas. Imagine that the Solstice energy of light has filled your body. The Christ light within has been embodied and expanded until you can imagine your heart filled with the energy of Christ like love. From this place of openness and receptivity imagine the year ahead. We are entering a new decade with so many possibilities.

How do you want to begin this new cycle? Capricorn loves to make lists, set goals, accomplish and strive. I want you to think differently about this new year. Instead of beginning this year with a set of goals that require effort, and complete focus I would like you to take a few moments to think about how you want to feel as you begin this new cycle. What is the feeling you would most like to embody in this year 2020? Here are a few ideas. See which ones you feel drawn to and write them down on your paper.

Seen, light-hearted, bliss, aligned, electric, devotion, infinite, joy, harmony, deep, wild hearted, powerful, soul-full, inspired, clarity, delight, flow, shine, sensuous, bold

Now pick three that feel like the most important and write them down on your paper. Keeping those feelings in mind contemplate what you need to do to feel like that more of the time. What would your year be like if those feelings were what determined most of your actions.? Can you see yourself choosing an experience, an activity, each day that would allow you to feel the way you most want to feel? Take a moment to write down your ideas.

Let’s shift gears a bit and think about the lunar eclipse happening on Jan. 10, the day of the full moon. Is there something in your life right now that is ending or that needs to end? Something you need to let go of?  This may center around family relationships or your emotional life. Any old outdated emotional responses that have outlived their usefulness? Are you willing to sit with any old memories or feelings and allow them to surface so they may be transformed? Take a moment to affirm your willingness to see whatever is in need of transformation. What might be in the way of you accessing those feelings you wish to embody?

Let us close our meditation with this prayer by Tama Kieves

I bless this year of my life. I bless all that it offered me and I bless all that I received. I thank myself for this year of my life. I thank myself for everything I tried, whether or not it worked. I thank myself for all the times I believed in myself, even if I could not sustain it for as long as I would have liked. I thank myself for the times I got it right. I thank myself for the times I stretched. I thank myself for the times I was generous with myself, I thank myself for the times I invested in my dreams. I thank myself for the times I spoke my truth and for the times I hunted for my truth. Now I ask that this new beginning be blessed. May I feed it with my love and attention. May this new beginning grow into a beautiful year of blessing for myself and for everyone I touch.

And so it is.
