Element Earth

Earth is one of four elements represented in the signs of the zodiac, the other three are Fire, Air and Water. Each element is represented in every chart, some will have a balance (equal distribution of the elements) and others will reflect an emphasis or lack of one or more of the elements.  All elements are equally important which is indicative of the relationship between people and life on earth. The basic principles behind the elements reveal something of the inherent qualities for each sign of the zodiac, and thus any given chart.

Manifesting and Organizing

The Earth signs are imbued with energy directed towards manifestation, stability and concretization. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn each have the potential to give form to ideas, organize, create structure, and make things happen. They are practical in nature and considered reliable and stable, with grounding characteristics. Earthy people tend to have their feet planted firmly on the ground, they are hard-working, and tend to be governed by a certain amount of sensibility. Each of the Earth signs express differently as they reflect the ‘quadruplicity’ (or mode) to which they belong.

Capricorn is a cardinal sign and its beginning marks the Winter Solstice, or the start of Winter in the Northern Hemisphere, so its associated energy is initiatory. Its grounding energy has the capacity to bring order out of chaos, exercise focused discipline and rise to a position of authority or leadership. As such, Capricorn can be a ‘take charge’ type, accepting responsibility and driving towards accomplishment.

Element EarthTaurus represents the fixed mode and is a sign that is known for its hardworking and loyal nature with the ability to persist through adversity. There is a solid determination with this sign that can be counted upon for its reliability and stability.

Practical and Reliable

The mutable Earth sign of Virgo is also hardworking and practical, but they are analytic and discerning by nature. They tend to manifest transition and change through process and analysis, with a view towards refinement and perfection. Therefore, across the spectrum of the Earth signs, one might notice a progression from Taurus as singularly focused on creature comforts and personal possessions, to Virgo taking its focus into a more social realm for the purpose of providing service to others, and finally to Capricorn who takes things into the realm of career and honor. Therefore, these signs move from the personal, to the social, to the world stage.

Inwardly Focused

Earth signs represent a negative polarity, meaning they tend to be more inwardly focused with a tendency towards self-reflection rather than being extraverted in their expression. Taurus tends to be methodical and deliberate in their approach to most things including their style of communication. Virgo, on the other hand, tends to be more selfless with a desire to be of service to others though they do have a tendency towards worrying. In the case of Capricorn, they express themselves with quiet confidence and their goals are focused on the bigger picture.

Expression of Earth Energy

An individual with an abundance of Earth can often be identified by a quiet strength and purposeful attitude always directed towards manifestation in some form. People with Sun, Moon or Ascendant in Earth signs, or with an emphasis of Earth in their chart, will tend to strongly exhibit those qualities.  For example, George Clooney has Sun in Taurus and Moon in Capricorn, which has manifested in a long career in acting which led to achieving further ambitions in directing, producing and screenwriting. One could also note the staying power he has had in an inherently ‘fickle’ industry, and his acquisitive nature in building his own wealth and resources.

Another example is American golfer Tiger Woods with Sun in Capricorn and Ascendant in Virgo. Tiger reached the top of his profession as one of the most successful golfers of all time and, in 2006, was the highest paid athlete. His success can be, in part, attributed to a methodical process of skill building through his formative years as well as the ongoing practice towards improvement that he maintained through his career, and a generally analytical and discerning approach to the game. Both Clooney and Woods are examples of the manifestation of Earth in their charts.

Earth Imbalances & Elemental Combinations

As with most things, an over-abundance or lack of an element can have an adverse affect on one’s general approach to life and the situations they encounter. Too much Earth in can show up as reluctance to express oneself, a reticence to act and thus appearing to be ‘stuck in the mud’, or a highly acquisitive and materialistic nature. A lack of Earth might appear as an individual who finds it challenging to make things happen, or has difficulty maintaining their financial health.

Other elements combined with Earth allows for the possibility of a slightly different expression of the ‘earth qualities’. For example, Earth with Fire can be very dynamic and capable of overcoming obstacles. Earth with Air can manifest as a kind of practical intelligence or common sense and a pragmatic approach. Earth with Water can be nurturing, caring, and perhaps have concerns about security.

There are always other factors in the chart to influence these traits, either by tempering or fueling them, which will have a bearing on the level of the element’s expression within the life of the individual. I invite you to consider the balance or imbalance of Earth in your own chart, and perhaps understand how the quality of this element has manifested for you.
