The third sign of the zodiac, Gemini is represented by the symbol of the Twins. With this moniker, we can quickly get the sense of the duality which often characterizes this first of the three Air signs. Those with strong Gemini in their chart, either Sun or Rising sign, can easily be identified by the constant activity, their talkative nature, and their infinite curiosity. Gemini tends to ask a lot of questions and can quickly become bored if they are not met with interesting ideas and varied conversation. They often seem interested in everything and can be quite animated, using their hands to add intonation to their dialogue or emphasize a particular point.

More so than the other signs of the zodiac, Gemini loves to communicate. They are quick thinking, generally good with words, often witty and very social. Lively and entertaining, Gemini can be quite a lot of fun with a large circle of acquaintances whom they will often regard as friends. FlittGeminiing from one idea or activity to another, the impression created by these natives may be that they have an attention deficit and cannot sit still. Quite energetic and often “on
the go”, it is difficult for them to remain focused for a long period of time and, like butterflies, they seem to flitter around from one idea or person to another. On the surface, they can appear superficial, picking up a lot of interesting information about a wide variety of topics and seeming to know a little bit about everything. Unless something holds a particular interest for them, they will not develop a great deal of depth in any one area. If, however, you want to know what is going on in your general neighbourhood, or amongst a particular group of friends, just ask the Gemini!

Gemini folks are intelligent and very flexible and adaptable to both people and situations. They can be quick to react and appear to be always ready for action. Curious by nature they have an interest in what is happening in their immediate world, and they very much like to be involved. They have a need for constant intellectual stimulation and can be very interesting company, compelling conversationalists who love to share their views and opinions. However, if they lose interest they can drop a project, cause, or idea just as quickly as they picked it up.

As with all three Air signs, Gemini has lots of ideas and is always thinking. One might find these people difficult to keep up with due to the volume and the speed with which their ideas are generated. There is lots of talk but not always the action to realize the ideas giving the impression they may have their head in the clouds. Without a way to bring their ideas down to earth, they may struggle to make things happen or see their ideas through to fruition. This is often where the “duality” is noticed most. They will appear to have great energy for a particular idea one minute and then show no interest quickly thereafter. There are always so many thoughts and ideas to choose from they can find it difficult to land on just one…opposing sides of a situation are often considered and you may hear statements that begin with “on one hand this, but on the other hand that.”  There are always two sides to any argument, or multiple options, making it a challenge to decide which one to select.

Mercury is the ruling planet for Gemini and, as referenced in an earlier post, Mercury speaks to how we communicate and process information, our ideas and perceptions, how we express ourselves, and where we like to focus that thinking and communication. Depending on how Gemini and Mercury appear in one’s chart, the individual’s preferred method of expression may be verbal, in person (one-on-one or in groups), or perhaps through the written word.  In the horoscope, the natural house for Gemini is the Third, the one naturally ruled by Mercury. This is the House of Communication, Early Learning, Siblings, Neighbourhood  (immediate surroundings), and short trips.

Where Gemini appears in our natal chart, by house and sign, there are clues about what we most like to think and talk about, as well as what and with whom we like to actively engage. For example, if Gemini appears on the cusp of the Second House, one might really enjoy talking about their values or resources…perhaps what they have, their personal financial situation, or even investments. These individuals may find themselves working in the banking or financial service industries. On the cusp of the Third House however, there may be a good deal of thinking or activity around relationships with one’s siblings or their immediate surroundings. Interestingly, some compatible occupations for these folks may be in the areas of writing, journalism, teachers for grade school, or even bus and taxi drivers. The reference here is with communication, early education and traveling within one’s own neighbourhood or close to home. If there is another sign on the cusp of the Third House, that sign will flavour the way the individual relates to each of these areas of life.

Consider where Gemini appears in your chart. Which House does it rule and which planets are in this sign? The sign on the cusp of your 3rd can reflect what you like to think about and how, as well as your preferences for communication, the way you relate to your siblings, and the type of neighbourhood in which you feel the most at ease. What have you noticed about the communication style of friends, family or colleagues? Do any of them appear to have some of the traits common with Gemini, and how well do you connect with them? Understanding how each of us thinks and communicates effectively is incredibly important in continuing to develop our own consciousness, and in helping us to contribute in ways that really matter to us.
