Stepping into a New Cycle

Aries, the start of the zodiac’s new year! As we progress into the sign of the Ram there is a sense of hopefulness and eager anticipation for what the coming month and year have in store for us. Here in the northern hemisphere we are seeing the first signs of Spring as, in some locations, the snow is melting and there is a hint of the first blades of new green grass. Part of the Aries strength is optimism and energy to drive forward through any obstacle. When you notice a small flower growing up through a crack in the concrete, that is symbolic of Aries drive and determination.

AriesRegardless of your Sun sign, the energy of the seasons always have an effect. After a long winter, I’m hopeful we’ve seen our last snowfall this year and I feel the excitement of anticipation for the warmth, Spring flowers and new beginnings that are just ahead. The forward motion of Aries reflects the Cardinal nature of the sign, meaning the energy is outwardly directed towards initiating ideas and taking action. On January 1st each year, in the sign of Capricorn, thoughts turn to resolutions, goals and plans, then in the following two months we consider what we will make happen, with whom and which groups, and how we can synthesize all of this to get ready to leap forward with Aries. Now is the time for action!

Finding Your Passion

As with all signs in the element of fire, Aries relates to enthusiasm, passion and inspiration. This is the month when you consider what you are passionate about and then take steps towards making it happen. If you are already certain of what you feel inspired to do, then wait no longer and get moving! Be aware though, there is a certain sense of naivety or innocence here that often causes Aries to get caught up in the excitement, bursting out of the starting gate without a plan or any thought of potential barriers and risks.

In these cases, at best, you drive through any obstacle that gets in your way, often without even seeing it, and you accomplish what you set out to do. The question to ask now, is ‘could the result have been more satisfying or rewarding if you had paused a moment to think about the road ahead and how best to travel it’? At worst, you reach the target, but a little worse for wear with cuts, scrapes and bruises, having crashed through any obstacle (person or thing) just in time to grab the prize. The question here is ‘at what cost’?

AriesSince we are just about to launch into baseball season I’ll use this analogy: it is the difference between running across home plate to score the winning run, feeling exhilarated, with the crowd cheering and your team mates giving you a high five, OR; running full out as you try to reach home ahead of a tag, then throw yourself forward to slide along the ground head first towards the plate, and stretch out with your hand just managing to touch home, only a split second ahead of being tagged…SAFE! But then you notice the knees of your pants are torn out, your elbows are scraped, you’ve sprained your wrist, and you are covered in dirt. You got the run but it wasn’t pretty and you’re feeling a little beat up. Which experience would you prefer?

Make it Happen

There are many things to admire about Aries and when all the dust settles they will have made things happen. Aries’ bravery allows them to step up to take action or make a statement when no one else will, often saying what other people are thinking but won’t say. Ruled by Mars, the god of war in Greek mythology, Aries represents the physical and untamed characteristics of the warrior who is willing to take up the battle and fight for what they want. They love adventure and have a pioneering spirit, often going where no one else dares. The phrase “I am” is indicative of their confidence and determination to be who they are wherever they are, no matter who they are with.

Mars in the chart, by sign and house, offers clues as to how we take action. In the sign of Leo for example, there is a lot of drive towards creativity and significance. Mars in Leo has a great deal of pride and acts with the heart, so their ego is strongly attached to their actions and how they are viewed. These natives exude power and magnetism often with a strong sense of authority. Take note of Mars in your chart to get a sense of how it shows up specifically in your life.

Our ‘Self’ in the World

The natural house of Aries is the 1st, representing how we ‘come forth’ and how we respond to the world around us. The sign on the cusp of the first house indicates characteristics of the individual’s approach and how they appear to others.  For example, Gemini on the 1st cusp often suggests an individual who has a great deal of curiosity about the people around them, is talkative, asks a lot of questions, is active, doesn’t often sit still, and tends to use hand gestures when they talk. The 1st house is us, it represents the ‘self’, so regardless of where Aries appears in one’s chart there is always some of that energy present, suggesting how you travel through life.

As you move through the month ahead, consider what you are passionate about and then initiate some action. Are you going to plant a garden, begin a building project, or start to study in an area you have always wanted to learn? Use the energy of Aries to push ahead with things you have been thinking about or planning, but haven’t yet initiated. Whatever you decide…enjoy!

Happy Spring!
