Fifth House

My Playground, My Crayons!

Fifth HouseThe Fifth House of the horoscope is most often identified as the house of Children and Creativity. Within this realm we also find Sports, Leisure, and Romance. So, what do each of these areas of life have in common? This is the natural house of Leo, so those things that make one shine have front and center stage. They each represent our creative self-expression, what we want to offer up, and how we want to be recognized. These are things we feel proud of and want to shout out to the world, “this is mine”, “it’s my baby”, “I did it”!

The sign on the cusp of the 5th house describes the nature of our attitude towards our creations and what we aspire to manifest as an expression of our passionate interests. For example, Libra on the cusp might suggest that harmony and fairness hold significant weight for us, particularly when it comes to sports and games. The nature of this influence suggests the true sportsperson, like the hockey player who is first to stand in line at the end of a game, shakes the hand of every member of the opposing team, regardless of whether they won or lost, and says “congratulations, good game, well played”… and really means it! In this example, it’s not so much about winning, but rather about everyone having a good time with the outcome reflecting fair and honest conduct during the engagement…it’s the love of the game. Since Libra is an air sign, it may also suggest that one’s pastimes reflect a cerebral nature and games could lean more towards the strategic such as Chess, or perhaps even passionate interest in the arts or music, reflecting the Venusian influence of the sign.

fifth house astrologyWhat we create in the 5th house is identified directly with us, bearing our own personal stamp, and for some, this represents children so the nature of one’s parental influence is often reflected here. A chart with Cancer on the cusp of the house may indicate a parenting style that is very nurturing and perhaps protective, with the individual working towards enabling their offspring to shine on their own, and stay safe and secure in the process. In another chart, the nurturing influence may also lean towards a love of cooking and creativity within the kitchen, and Julia Child would be a good example of this. Without children of one’s own the 5th house is often about those undertakings we label as passion projects, indicative of significant personal focus…putting one’s heart and soul into the endeavor with the finished product clearly reflecting one’s personal style or mark.

Planets residing in this area become the players associated with our creativity and leisure. As an example, Neptune in this position might suggest a love of movies and the cinema, since the planet has rulership over such things. The sign on the cusp, or the sign of the planet in the 5th house, can provide clues as to the type (or flavor) of the movies one likes. Neptune in Scorpio may reflect an interest in the Mystery and Thriller genres, and the top choice for the Aquarian Neptune may be Sci-Fi or something Avant Garde. Mars in the 5th may represent an athlete with a competitive spirit and a desire to participate in sports of a physical nature, such as soccer or rugby. The sign of Sagittarius leans to a more adventurous character and may show up as a love of the great outdoors where camping or travel are one’s leisurely pursuits. It may also indicate an individual who enjoys teaching children in a creative environment or subject.

Another area of life within this realm is Romance, though it is important to note that this area is quite a bit different than the 7th house of marriage, relationship, partnership and commitment. A romantic connection is one that has the potential to lead to marriage or partnership and is part of the journey towards a committed relationship. People often come together or connect within shared areas of interest or common endeavors, sometimes romance is the result. Within a romantic relationship, one learns about how the other shines, or wants to. Often, the warmth of Leo’s domain draws people together. Not surprisingly, fire is the element associated with this house, and Leo’s passion can spark and fan the flames of romance. Of course, one likes to think an element of fun is also in play here and Venus in this placement could very well reflect the passionate and playful romantic, particularly if the signs of Taurus or Libra appear on the cusp.

When the Sun in Leo it’s the time to consider the 5th house and the significant projects we want to bring to life, and the type of fun we want enjoy. Now that it’s summer in the northern hemisphere, many of us are drawn to outdoor activities with plans to get outside and enjoy all the season has to offer. The warmth of the Sun beckons, physically and astrologically. Think of the 5th house as YOUR own personal playground or canvas, where you get to choose the crayons. Have fun, be creative, and SHINE!

Happy Summer!
