Angular Houses of the Horoscope

Every chart contains twelve Houses and each of these correspond to an area of life. The 1st House for example is the House of Self, the 2nd is the House of Values, and so on, the detail for each has been discussed in earlier postings. However, in addition to the twelve areas of life, each House is grouped into one of three categories that influence the energy related to the planets residing therein. These categories are angular, succedent, and cadent.

The Angular Houses are the Ascendant or ASC (1st), Descendant or DC (7th), Midheaven or MC (10th), and the Nadir or IC (4th). These are considered the most potent areas of a chart, and planets placed within any of these Houses are infused with energy and represent significant influence in the chart, and thus the life of the individual.

The Immediate Environment

Planets in the 1st House relate to the individual’s immediate environment and represent a constant source of fuel or energy in their relationship to the world around them. Immediately across the chart, planets in the Angular 7th House represent the energy that is focused on close partnerships, including the type of people we meet and how they come into our lives. Planets in the 4th House indicate the nature of the material structure and events surrounding home and family.

Additionally, since the angle of the IC is at the base of the chart it holds significance for our roots and where we come from, including the psychological development of the individual. The Angular 10th House, directly opposite, reflects the direction in which we are going through profession and career, and suggests our standing in the world.

Angular House Energy

The energy of planets located within any of the Angular Houses can be likened to the Cardinal Energy of the signs Aries, Cancer, Libra and Aquarius, representing their natural zodiac placement in the chart. The suggestion here is that the constant action or energy exerted by any of the planets residing within the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th Houses, emphasizes the influence and impact of the planet and highlights the significance of what is represented by the area of life.

It is important to note that the sign on the cusp of each of theses Houses must also be taken into consideration since the sign, as always, influences the way in which the energy manifests.

Planets at the Angles

Another item of significance is a planet’s relative proximity to the Angle itself, either ASC, DC, MC or IC. Any planet within an orb of between zero and four degrees is considered extremely potent with great significance. For example, Pluto within two degrees of the IC suggests a great deal of power and focus related to family roots, ancestry and any related psychology, with potential for transformation. You may recall that for each of the outer planets it is the House that is significant in the life of the individual, the sign it occupies relates to generational issues and considerations.

Make It Personal

I invite you to take a look at your own chart. Do you have planets residing in the Angular Houses? Consider the significance and potency of their role in your life and how that energy has manifested for you.  Succedent and Cadent Houses will be discussed in the next two postings.
