Fire

Enthusiasm, Inspiration, Optimism and Passion

The elements represent a major component of the zodiac and every chart has all four (Fire, Earth, Air, and Water) represented in some way. Each element is equally important and reflects a critical relationship to life on planet earth.

While many charts will have a balance of these energies, many more still will have either an emphasis or lack of one (or more) of them, therefore an understanding of the elements can provide insight and a clear starting point to interpreting the whole chart. Once you understand the basic principles behind the elements you will begin to recognize something of the quality inherent in each of the zodiac signs.

The Fire signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, all tend to express a warm and radiating type of energy that we often see manifest through their enthusiasm, passion and inspiration.   There is an innate creativity with Fire, along with a sense of individualism, self-confidence, and a pioneering spirit.

Fire Sign Energy Expression

While these signs share common qualities, all three express somewhat differently as they each belong to a different ‘quadruplicity’ (or mode). Aries is a cardinal sign and marks the beginning of the zodiac year (or cycle), so the energy associated with it is initiatory. Known as the pioneer or warrior, the fire of Aries is often struck by a cause or idea that inspires these forward moving archetypes. Leo represents the fixed mode and tends to ground its inspiration in the ideas of loyalty, nobility, and honor, drawing others in through the power of its warmth and enthusiasm. Sagittarius reflects mutability and is always on the move, ready for change and the opportunity to morph in its quest for meaning and adventure.

Making Things Happen

FieryAll the fire signs can be quite stimulating and good at making things happen. Fire signs, have positive polarity which means they tend to be more outwardly expressive and look to make a connection, they are often seen as extraverts. An individual with particularly strong fire can be easily identified by their actions. Aries tends to rush ahead and be in a hurry to achieve their goals, often butting heads and pushing others out of the way. These folks are often singularly focused, independent, and impulsive.

One often notices Leo in terms of their demeanour or outgoing and, at times, gregarious and verbose form of expression. They have a quality that in some way announces their arrival into a room or situation, either by personal proclamation or through colorful and creative presentation.

Sagittarius is the fun-loving adventurer, always looking over the next hill to see what they can find. They are nothing if not flexible and can be distracted from their purpose by the potential of the next inspiring idea or venture.

Fire Emphasis in the Chart

People with Sun, Moon or Ascendant in Fire signs, or with an emphasis of Fire in their chart, will tend to have a warmth and friendliness that attracts others to them. They can be quite charismatic and often find themselves in leadership positions…Sir Richard Branson, for example is a Leo Ascendant, while former President Bill Clinton is a Leo Sun. There is also an innate creativity and a desire for independent self-expression with fire signs, and American actor Marlon Brando seems to fit this description quite well, and intensely, as a double Aries (both Sun and Moon), with a Sagittarius Ascendant.

British actor and comedian Billy Connolly is a shining example of an adaptable, fun-loving, and at times inspirational Sagittarius Sun. With each fire sign, there is a sense of idealism and intensity which has the potential to burn out of control or appear somewhat reckless in its expression. Sometimes fire can burn too hot and others might find the intensity quite exhausting, or the individual may periodically burn themselves out. Regardless, its safe to say that the life of a fire sign is never uneventful.

Blending the Elements

Too much or too little of a particular element can have an adverse affect on situations within one’s life. Too much fire in a chart can result in a highly impulsive individual who has lots of energy but no clear direction. A lack of fire can show up as a lack of self-confidence or lack of drive and optimism. A combination of other elements with Fire creates possibilities for a different manifestation of the ‘fire qualities’.

For example, Fire with Earth often comes across as dynamic with the ability to get things done and overcome obstacles. Fire with Air can result in lots of inspirational ideas and idealism. In the case of Fire and Water, creativity may be emphasized with a tendency towards the emotional. Of course, other factors in the chart will have some influence and may offset or intensify these traits.

Awareness is Key to Self-understanding

Awareness is key in self-understanding, and there is always potential for the individual to modify behaviour based on personal growth and experience.

The degree to which each element is reflected in a natal chart will have a bearing on the level of that energy’s expression within the life of the individual. I invite you to consider your own chart to discover the extent or imbalance of fire reflected there and consider how this manifests for you. In considering some of the traits and examples provided here, you may have recognized hints of fiery personalities you know.
